Wonderful trip of a lifetime. Sandi did an excellent job, however AMA Waterways could fix a few items. AMA app advertised as providing information for your trip. Trips to Egypt and Africa were not available even though AMA said they would be available
for our trip. IT WAS NOT. I would rather know the truth than being misled. The itinerary for flights to board the Zambezi Queen was changed. We landed at Victoria Falls airport and not Kasine as planned. This made for a long drive to the boat. Getting a Visa for Botswana required $45 cash per person, South Africa Rand was not accepted. Having to go through immigration each time we got off or on the the boat was a giant hassle. The small tenders are difficult to get out of to walk up a dirt bank at the landing. AMA should have the immigration officer brought to the Zambezi Queen or have an AMA representative collect Passports and take them to Immigration. This type procedure is done all over the world. The day spent in Johannesburg between Victoria Falls and the land sagari at Tintswalo was a waste of time. Time would be much better spent with an additional day on the boat or an additional day at Tintswallo Lodge. We didn’t spend $50,000 to drive/walk through to terrible slums of Soweto. If someone wanted to experience this it should be made an additional excursion fully described in the brochure. AMA representatives were wonderful, especially Frank who coordinated getting medical attention for my wife who injured her leg getting out of one of the boats going to one of the six trips through immigration. Overall an outstanding experience that could be even better if AMA can better coordinate the immigration issues. Wonderful trip of a lifetime. This was our second trip planned through Tanya and we are grateful for her help on both trips. Every aspect that she helped with was great (even if we had issues with the companies involved, it was nothing that Tanya had control over). Michael and I , enjoyed seeing the Hoover Dam and the Western rim of the Grand Canyon. Awesome view and beautiful like it was painted as the sun went down. We spent the beginning of January on the Island Princess sailing from Los Angeles, through the Panama Canal, and ending in Fort Lauderdale. This was our second full transit with Princess and we loved it more than the first.
The two ports in Mexico were not our kind of ports, so we enjoyed the pool on those days after disembarking just long enough to send our granddaughter a postcard.
Nicaragua was once again amazing! We got up close and personal with an active volcano. We then went on to Grenada, which I must say surprised me a little. I really didn't know much about this city. I, of course, had heard of the unrest and fighting in the 70's but that was about it. Our guide was from Grenada and very informative I highly suggest taking the excursion that takes you into Grenada.
Costa Rica found us at another volcano with the fog and mist flying so low that we only got a quick peek at the crater itself but we saw it! We saw a local coffee field where the beans were being hand picked and enjoyed the best cup of coffee we had on the trip!
The other ports, Columbia and Aruba, were not meant to be, as my darling hubby came down with the flu. We immediately went to medical and he was given medication to make him comfortable and we were both given Tamiflu, him to shorten the length of illness and me to prevent it. He was quarantined in our stateroom until he was 24 hours without a fever. A lot of passengers were affected and I must commend the ships medical team for handling the situation.
We disembarked in Fort Lauderdale without our luggage. We used the service of sending it directly to the airport and recommend it to anyone who qualifies. A minimal fee gets your bags to your end destination before you have to bother with them!
